FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is it safe to use this extension? Where are my files processed?

Yes, it’s safe. All processing happens locally within your Chrome browser. Files are not uploaded to any servers; your data stays on your device. Optional exceptions: VirusTotal if you start a check, Google Drive if you save there.

What happens to the extracted files after I close the browser tab?

Extracted files are typically available for download to your computer or temporarily stored in the browser’s memory/cache and deleted after the session. Since processing is local, files don’t remain in the cloud”.

Do I need extra software?

No. This extension is a self-contained tool for unpacking archives directly in your Chrome browser. No other programs are needed.

Which formats are supported?

.zip, .7z, .rar, .tar, .bzip2, .bz2, .gzip, .gz, .xz, .zstd, .zst, .xar, and .wim. Pro can also open numbered split volumes from 7-Zip.

Is there a size limit?

The extension itself doesn’t impose a fixed size limit, but the actual maximum size you can extract reliably depends heavily on your computer’s available RAM, Chrome’s stability with large operations, your storage space, and the complexity of the archive. For small to medium-sized archives, it works as advertised. For very large archives (e.g., >1-2GB), dedicated desktop software is generally more reliable.

Why the description text says “No size restrictions”?

This is meant to contrast with some online unzip services that do enforce strict file size limits (e.g., 100MB, 500MB). The extension avoids those specific service-imposed limits since processing happens locally. However, it doesn’t magically remove the fundamental limitations of browser-based processing and local hardware.

Does it work offline?

Yes for files already on disk. Installing the extension, opening a URL, Drive, and Pro checkout need a connection. Pro stays available offline for up to 72 hours after the last successful check.

What happens to extracted files when I close the tab?

Nothing is kept on our servers. Save what you need to disk or Drive before you close the session. Temporary workspace state is cleared when the session ends.

Will this extension slow down my Chrome browser?

The extension is positioned as lightweight (“lightweight design”) and designed not to slow down your browser

Does the extension have appearance settings (themes)?

Yes. The text mentions a Dark/Light/System toggle theme and a Primary color settings toggle button.
